Visual Metaphor
This exercise will encourage you to engage with the process of understanding metaphors and to explore the potential of text and image as a means of conveying a graphic statement. In addition it will encourage you to draw relationships between meaning and aesthetics.

Instruction:
You will be assigned a selection of narrative statements from which to base your initial enquiry.
These range from strap-lines, famous quotes and proverbs.
Having researched all your options, you are to focus on one of your statements and recreate it as a visual metaphor. Any type of medium – photography, illustration, type - may be used to complete the visual statement.

Tips:
1. Consider all aspects of the statement – the principle meaning and any double meanings.
2. Consider the overall harmony of the piece and the relationship between both the narrative and the visual statement.
3. You might want to consider creating a 'pure' metaphor - using an unmanipulated found image that changes its meaning when placed in the context of your quote. See the example below.
4. You might want to consider a 'fused' metaphor - using either an 'additional' or 'substitute' visual element. See the examples below.

Rules:
1. Your finished piece must be predominantly a visual solution.
2. The required dimensions are 250 x 250mm at a resolution of 300dpi.
3. The finished piece must also be of the highest standard.
4. Place your quote underneath your finished piece of work. Do NOT include the quote as part of the finished piece. This is to be included at a later stage.
